tripadvisor reviews
Out of time and fashions Second time at the Old House.
This time for the Reveillon dinner / 5-course and dodo formula. Very neat service from our host Helmut. Unique service in fact. Consider a 500 year old house, lost in the scrubland / forest behind Anduze. Tastefully retyped and a certain originality in the image of its owner. Absolute calm, magnificent views, wild life in the surroundings (met a wild boar on the small path leading to the farmhouse the evening of our arrival). Magnificent large fireplace with crackling fire on arrival. A bit like stepping back in time and arriving in a sort of 16th century inn. Dinner made on site with exceptional products (pikeperch and deer in particular). Helmut offers a highly technical cuisine, with a lot of bias in the choice of ingredients, their associations, the quality of its condiments (a succession of peppers from around the world used intelligently according to the main course). So a mix of traditional cuisine with a hint of exoticism. Everything you would expect from a table of a certain standard. Restricted selection of wines (a quality!), Regional and well made (special note with Mazelet, produced a few hectometers from the farmhouse and which also deserves a detour because of its use of non-local grape varieties). Loved the atmosphere with the multiple candles everywhere, of different models, less fan of oil lamps. Very nice for the atmosphere, but it gives off a certain smell and with the quality of the food served, it bothered me a bit. Also very surprised by the negative comments read on tripadvisor and which question the "luxury" of the Old House. As a result, yes we are in a proposal of rare luxury. And that comes at a certain cost. I can't blame those who think that luxury is to be able to bathe in marble, to have gilding, excessive lights, butlers at attention, but why end up in the middle of the Cévennes ?! You might as well book a great multi-star hotel with all the service and sanitized comfort. Here luxury is the place. He has a soul. Just like its owner. The walls have been standing for half a millennium (not the owner, I can assure you!). So there is a certain dilapidation preserved in the restoration, but it is normal, it dresses the house, and brings its charm. Helmut isn't a professional butler who necessarily asks you if you had a good trip and congratulates you on the quality of your overcoat. It is rather discreet, and it is so pleasant not to have to endure these hotel conveniences and to go straight to the truth ... especially since the table d'hôte concept means that you share the places with one or two other couples (maximum). The opportunity to meet other people, other trajectories who for an evening, also chose to stop in this Old House and to take the time."
