The permanent collections of the Soulages museum constitute the most important ensemble of the painter Pierre Soulages in the world.
The museum offers to discover his early works, etchings, lithographs, serigraphs, works on paper, all the delicate walnut stains, preparatory work for the stained-glass windows of Conques, paintings on canvas up to the Outrenoir.
The 1,700 square meters of permanent exhibition are designed to accommodate the variety of the artist’s work. The light entering the museum space is perfectly controlled in order to create dark passages where the works on paper and walnut stains are displayed, and brighter spaces for the paintings and cardboard stained glass windows of Conques. High and bright rooms are followed by lower and darker rooms, producing very different and knowingly alternating light atmospheres.
Organized around the technique and materiality that guided the creation of the works presented, the museum tour is very free. It is punctuated by visitor assistance systems: documentary collections, images, texts, archive films.
