Miles of golden-sand beaches (and famous Maspalomas sand dunes), scorching summer heat with beach weather all through the winter, dozens upon dozens of gay bars, restaurants, shops and clubs most situated side-by-side in two large commercial centers in Playa del Ingles & the mediterranean men are perhaps the main attractions here but the island has so much more to offer. The island of Gran Canaria is one of the world's best-known gay holiday destinations, and every year thousands of gay men visit here to take advantage of its wonderful climate, beaches and wild nightlife.
Gran Canaria has consolidated itself as one of the most popular gay tourist resorts in Europe. Only a few hours flight away from the Old Continent's main cities, the island acts as a meeting point for tourists looking for temperatures between 18 and 25 degrees all year round.
The accommodation offer is as varied as the Island itself and as welcoming as its people. You can find accommodation in pretty bungalows or apartments on the coast or small country hotels on the central area of the island for those who prefer to enjoy nature. You can also discover a wide variety of services intended for rest and relaxation from a spa session to a mud bath.
But above all, Gran Canaria offers a whole host of beaches for sun and sea lovers. In the south of the island, we find Maspalomas beach, which stretches for several kilometres, immersed in an enormous field of dunes, offering the opportunity for everyone to enjoy a day at the beach. There are peaceful areas for nudism and more lively areas around the ‘beach bars'.
More and more gay men are choosing to move to Gran Canaria and make it their home, so we've put together lots of useful information to help make settling in here that bit easier. The main beaches are located along the southern part of the island, between Tarajalillo and Mogán, which is the sunniest and driest part of the island. The mountains of the interior act as a barrier against the clouds that come from the North, with the result that the skies in the South remain clear practically all year round, which makes it possible to enjoy the sun and bathe in the sea in summer as well as winter.
The whole of Gran Canaria is "duty free" so whilst you shop till you drop in the south of the island, you'll be paying less than you would in the duty free at the airport. Las Palmas city in the north however offers some of the best shopping in Spain.
